Born October 15, 1983, Bruno Senna Lalli is a prominent Brazilian Formula One driver. He is also the nephew of the late 3 time F1 world champion and legend of the sport, Ayrton Senna. Expectations are naturally great for Senna since he is the nephew of perhaps the greatest Formula One racer of all time. Senna seems to carry a part of his uncle with him when he races, as he wears a slightly modified version of the helmet that his uncle wore. Ayrton Senna died after a crash during the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix and Bruno’s father, Flavio Lalli, passed away after a tragic motorcycle crash two years later in 1996.
Senna, like most young boys who dream of racing, was fond of karting. However, after losing both his uncle and father in a span of two years because of deadly crashes, Senna decided to focus primarily on his studies. The transition was difficult but he experience success even starting a business degree when he left school. Of course, Senna still had an itch to race. In 2004, he decided to return to the sport and shifted to the UK. 21 years of age may seem young, but it is considered to be ancient for a novice driver, as Senna was. In 2005 and 2006, Senna succeeded against the odds and performed very well, racking up three pole positions, five wins and two second-place finishes.
Let’s fast forward now to a very recent date – January 17, 2012. On this date it was confirmed that Senna would replace his close friend and long-time mentor Rubens Barrichello at Williams and now his new teammate is Pastor Maldonado. Many experts seem to believe that the move to replace Barrichello with Senna was largely to increase sponsorship backing. However, Williams has denied this and has stated that Senna won on merit. There is no doubt that Senna has a wealth of untapped potential and has incredible promise to perform well in Formula One. He has proved himself and possesses tremendous promise for this year and several years to come.
