Australian driver Daniel Ricciardo begins his first full season in Formula One as a new driver for Torro Rosso alongside rookie Jean-Eric Vergne. Ricciardo did compete in the last 11 races of the 2011 season when he was on loan from Torro Rosso to the HRT team. He was born in Perth, Australia on July, 1, 1989 and was a Formula One fan from a young age, his favorite driver being Ayrton Senna. Daniel’s love of motor sport attracted him at the age of nine to karting, a sport at which he showed great skill and received a high level of success.
In 2005, he moved up to the next level, starting to race single-seaters in the Australian Formula Ford Series. He showed skill quickly by turning in impressive performances in a car that was considered to be weak. This impressive first season won him a scholarship to the Formula BMW Asia Championship, in which he claimed two wins and 10 other podium finishes. Over the next few years he turned in good performances in various championships including Formula Renault and the British Formula Three, quickly attracting the attention of the Red Bull F1 team with whom he signed a contract for their junior team.
Daniel received two tests for the main Red Bull F1 team in 2009 and 2010, which eventually won him a spot as a reserve driver for their sister team, Torro Rosso. In 2011 Torro Rosso sent Ricciardo on loan to HRT to take over from Indian driver Narian Karthikeyan. The HRT car was one of the slowest on the grid so it was hard to turn in great performances, but Daniel was able to secure two 18th position finishes out of his 11 races. In 2012, he finds himself in a better car, running in the mid-field and will be looking to beat both his teammate and break into the top 10 positions in races.
