Felipe Massa is a Formula One racing driver, born in Sao Paolo in April 1981. He started racing karts at eight years of age, before successfully moving through the national and international championship circuit in Latin America and leaving for Europe in 2000. He won the Italian and European Formula Renault championships immediately. This success led the Sauber racing team to offer him his first drive in Formula One for the 2002 season.

Massa signed for the legendary Ferrari team in 2006. The move allowed him to claim his first Grand Prix win that season in Turkey. He went on to win 11 times and achieve 27 podium finishes over the next three seasons. However, his last race win came in 2008 and he became better known last season for his well publicized fall out with 2008 World Champion, Lewis Hamilton.

They were not on speaking terms for much of the 2011 season thanks to six on-track collisions, with each blaming the other for driving mistakes. The initial incident saw Massa bang wheels with his nemesis during the Monaco GP, with Hamilton picking up a drive-through penalty. From that moment, the pair clashed at regular intervals on the track and delivered harsh words off it. The tension built, but finally the hatchet was buried after the final race of the season in Brazil. Hamilton approached Massa and the pair shared hugs and smiles.

As for the new season, Massa will need to return winning ways now the feud with Hamilton is in the past – and quickly! It has been widely reported that Ferrari is delaying the decision on extending Massa’s contract until mid-season, to see if he can rediscover his form. Felipe is a long shot for the title, but consistent podium finishes are needed to secure his long-term future.
