Jenson Button in 2013 sees himself as the team’s #1 driver with his teammate a young Sergio Perez. He was teammate of Lewis Hamilton for a few years and now McLaren faces a different task of seeing how far both drivers can go individually and as a team towards winning the constructors championship.
Born in 1980, in England, he has been pushing the boundaries of his sport from an early age. He began karting at eight and by the age of just 11 he aced an entire season of the British Cadet Kart Championships, winning all of the 34 races that year. By the age of 20, racing team Williams gave him his first drive in Formula One, the pinnacle of the international motor racing world. This achievement saw his place in the record books secured as Britain’s youngest ever Formula One driver.
His early years in F1 were spent learning his trade with Bentton/Renault and BAR. BAR were renamed Honda in 2006 and this change seemed to suit Jenson, winning his first race in 113 starts at the Hungarian Grand Prix. Shortly before the 2009 season, Jenson was not signed to a team and was left without a drive. Honda had withdrawn from the sport and it was not until Ross Brawn led a management buy-out and created Brawn GP that Jenson was guaranteed to race. He stormed to a record-equalling six wins form the first seven races and led the Driver’s Championship from start to finish.
After his success, Button decided to join British racing team McLaren and team up with his compatriot Lewis Hamilton. Generally regarded as the team’s second driver, Jenson out-performed his teammate last season. He finished second in the Driver’s Championship, over 40 points clear of Hamilton. The 2012 season promises to be positive one for Button, though the bookmakers see him as a distant fourth favorite for the title. Vettel is short priced to wrap up a hat-trick wins, but Jenson will be striving chase him down the finishing straight.
