There are several question marks coming into the 2012 Formula 1 season. However, the most pressing concern isn’t about a driver or a team but about a race itself. The 2012 Bahrain Grand Prix remains on the schedule even though there are grave concerns about the race taking place as scheduled on April 22. Last season’s Bahrain Grand Prix was postponed twice and ultimately canceled because of political protests against the country’s rulers. With more protests expected around the time of the race, a group of British politicians urged Formula 1 in early February to cancel the race in 2012.

As always, the decision to run the race or not will come down to Formula 1 rights holder Bernie Ecclestone. It’s likely that if there is money to be made in Bahrain, Ecclestone will find a way to make the race work. If the race does take place as scheduled, it has the opportunity to become a fascinating duel in the desert between some of the sport’s biggest stars.
Sebastian Vettel is certainly going to be one of the favorites coming into the Bahrain Grand Prix; he will be the favorite at almost any track in 2012. That’s what happens when you are the defending, two-time Formula 1 champion. Vettel improved on his stellar 2010 campaign last year, clinching the title with ease in putting together one of the most dominating seasons in Formula 1 history. He won 11 times in 19 races for Red Bull along with claiming 15 pole positions.
While Vettel has dominated the series over the past few seasons, he has yet to notch a victory at the 3.9 mile Bahrain International Circuit. He claimed the pole for the last race at the track in 2010 and appeared to be cruising to a comfortable victory when he was felled by a spark plug problem late in the race. Vettel’s problems opened the door for Fernando Alonso, who claimed a victory for Ferrari in his first race with the team.
